What is compelling about using NPSIMS?
It is very simple to use and helps keep the wound clean and sterile for 7 days which should reduce the rate of surgical site infection. There is greater clinical gain in wounds in lower extremities where there may otherwise be complications and wound breakdown.
Were the wounds that you used NPSIMS on highly exuding?
No, they were low exuding wounds as most incisional wounds usually are in our plastics practice. The device has no cylinder to capture exudate so we would not use it on a highly exuding wound.
What is it about NPSIMS that you particularly like?
I like the fact that it is simple and easy to use. The device requires so little effort to set up and it is completely quiet which patients like.
Is there any issue with the dressing being clear?
No, I don’t think any patients had an issue with this.
Was the size of the dressing adequate?
Yes, we only had the one size but it suited our patients reasonably well. Other sizes are being introduced but most of our incisions are smaller so it was fine.
How did the patients manage the device?
The device is extremely light weight and contains no mechanical components so most put it in their pockets and some just let it dangle. They liked the device and found it easy to manage.
How does NPSIMS compare to products like PICO?
Well it is going to be more cost effective and patients aren’t bothered by buzzing at night which they are with PICO. The dressing also has a wider film border which is more flexible and you don’t have to custom fit to the wound. It is easy to get a seal which is great.
